I think a comparison between elves in games and novels are due. In the 5 Darkblade novels by Dan Abnett, the dark elf Malus Darkblade is devious and a cruel elf. In Tolkien's works the dark elves are not as cruel as the dark elves in Darkblade. In D&D the elves are merely elves who all share the same good nature. The light elves are spirits and manifestations of what we could be. The dark elves are still better than u7 but corrupted. Without the dark elves, however, the world and spirit world is imbalanced. As in this case the novel is also out of balance if there is no antagonist. In the case of Darkblade, Malus is the protagonist. It sheds new light on the feelings of the other side, the other less docile elves whose feelings and adventures as antagonists in other novels were neglected. Abnett wrote novels abt High elves also and thus explained their emotions separately. *
